Question #3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There are many distributors of films ranging from the mainstream to the independent, ranging from giants such as universal to independents such as Lionsgate. In this question I will discuss potential distributors and give my opinion on who I believe would be the most ideal for our media product.

Blumhouse:

There are obvious picks for our media product, as our film is psychological thriller we can narrow down film companies and studios that specialise in that field or genres similar to it, Blumhouse is a semi-obvious pick. Blumhouse, specialise in horror they create and distribute horror products in recent times they have created some of the most successful and created the most excitement for upcoming films, some of their recent discography include titles such as: Unfriended, Hush, The Lazarus effect and Amityville, there are tons more as well. The only problem with choosing Blumhouse is the fact that they are strictly horror based, like I mentioned earlier, we chose to include a larger horror range in our opening sequence, unlike most psychological thrillers, however, psychological thriller is still the main genre of our film, not horror. And as such it may be a very hard decision as to whether or not we choose Blumhouse.

Universal:

When you think of universal you probably think of insane Hollywood blockbusters where 100’s of millions of pounds has been spent, and you would be correct. However, Universal has also produced some of the most recent and distant successful horrors/thrillers of all time, their discography includes: Insidious, Sinister, Psycho, Frankenstein, Dracula and many, many more. Just from that list alone you can see horror legends, and psycho is considered one of the best thrillers ever made, so Universal would seem to be a good pick, especially since it is not genre specific, so a mixture of genres would not be scrutinized within the studio. The only criticism of course would be that most of these films are Hollywood blockbusters, so an indie film such as ours would possibly just get completely ignored however I do believe our film targets a mainstream audience a main target of universal films.

Paramount:

Paramount is very similar to Universal in many ways however they have a lot more thriller on their discography than Universal does, for example, The Ring, Friday the 13th, April Fools Day etc. Many of these films follow the same conventions we do which a mixture of the horror genre and thriller genre, the only difference being we are producing a psychological thriller not a normal thriller which should not make too much of an impact or difference in the mix. I believe they would be a strong company to represent us as similar to universal they represent an incredible amount of genres, unlike independents who rely on one niche genre. And just like Universal and mainstream companies in general is they are mainstream, so if they find a small indie film like ours doesn’t represent enough they may not choose our film as worth their time, however, like mentioned before, I do believe we have a large representation in our film

New-line cinema:

New-line cinema has been creating incredible thrillers for years now, their impressive discography attracts the idea of them being the company that best represents our film, their discography includes thriller legends such as: The Butterfly effect, Seven, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Chucky. As you can see New-Line cinema produces thriller classics and it would be honourable to be represented by them, a massive benefit of using New-line cinema is that they are owned by Warner Bros who is obviously a massive company would be able to fund the project as well being backed by a large company whilst being represented by a niche, independent one, means our film has a higher chance of being distributed by them. Again like previously with Warner on New-Line cinemas back, they may limit creative freedom, New-Line may want to represent us but Warner may not, a obstacle we will have to overcome.
